Falling In Love With Lumia
For those of you who don't know, I am a gadget geek. I've been rocking an Android phone since the release of the G1, and was the self-appointed "Android Evangelist" when I used to work at the local Verizon store. I rooted, cracked, hacked, and tweaked just about every setting you could, and absolutely loved my Galaxy Nexus.
Why do I have a Nokia (or Microsoft now) Lumia 928 now? I have nothing Windows related in my home, so why choose Windows Phone 8 as an OS? Am I crazy?! Maybe. I hear a lot of arguments for each OS that border pure vanity, and when I took a serious look at this Lumia, my needs were simple. I don't need 500 apps, nor use that many, I play a couple games to waste time now and then, and my life revolves around being connected and running Social Media platforms for my clients.
Aesthetically I fell in love with the Windows Phone OS before leaving Android. I had my Nexus running all it's default apps as if it was a Windows Phone (save the browser), because I really enjoy the simplicity, minimalism, and uniqueness of how the UX runs and feels on Windows Phone OS. One of the selling points for me as well, was the Carl Zeiss camera lens, and the Xeon flash. This phone takes great pictures, and I started a Tumblr just to show it off.
I'm at the point in life where I want products/devices that work for me, and do what I need it to do. I love tinkering, don't get me wrong, but some of the arguments from fan boys/girls on every side of the aisle is mostly focused on pure personal preference.
Windows Phone 8 isn't perfect, and I don't think 8.1 will fix everything, and I do miss some of Google's products on my phone (though they are on my tablet). What excites me is how the developer community is so tight, and really passionate about what they do. It reminds me of the early days of Android, in the Eclair/Froyo days, and some of the third-party apps are even better than the original (check out 6tag for starters). In my most humble opinion, Windows Phone 8 is worth checking out, and we really shouldn't knock it till we try it.
