Wisdom From Hagakure

Although it stands to reason that a samurai should be mindful of the Way of the Samurai, it would seem that we are all negligent. Consequently, if someone were to ask, "What is the true meaning of the Way of the Samurai?" the person who would be able to answer promptly is rare. This is because it has not been established in one's mind beforehand.

- Yamamoto Tsunetomo, expert from Hagakure

One of the most influential books in my life, apart from the Bible, has been Hagakure. This book was written around 1700, and contains a collections of thoughts and maxims from an old Samurai passing his knowledge in The Way of the Samurai down to the younger generation.

The quote above is how the book starts out. The tone of this entire collection of wisdom begins with a firm foundation in knowing The Way that you follow. In Japan during this time, there were considered many "Ways." The mindset was that if you were a fisherman, you followed The Way of the Fisherman. For the Samurai (Samurai translates literally as "one who serves") The Way was well established, and the mindset of a Samurai should be fixed to it.

Why did I pick this out? Because today I feel exhausted from all the projects and responsibilities that I have placed on myself. In no way am I looking for pity, or for help, what I am looking for is a reminder of why I am doing what I am doing. What is The Way of AJ?

I know that for right now, I am in a season of great opportunities and great work. I have been blessed with being surrounded by innovative people, passionate people looking to do great things for this city we live in, passionate about changing lives. And that passion is my Way. So I am grateful for these opportunities and challenges, and proud to have many of those around me entrust me with delivering the goods.

What is your Way?
