"Facts and Figures are forgotten, Stories are retold."
- Jeffrey Gitomer
One of the things I always have in my backpack is my little red Moleskin journal. Within it's cover is a collection of great quotes, newfound words, and inspiring writings that I come across. I think it's important to keep these powerful words close by at all times, and read through them when I have a chance.
The quote above is from Jeffrey Gitomer, a self-described Sales Expert, who has written many great books on sales, personal attitude, and personal development. Even if you don't work in sales, there are great lessons contained in these little books that will help change your perspective on interacting with people.
When I read the quote above, it struck me upside the head like a 2X4. Personal anecdotes, compelling stories, and testimonies are what is shared online and in person more than simple facts and figures. These personal stories drive us to visit new restaurants, or stay away from a particular product. There's no logic to drive these conclusions. No matter how many iPhones are sold in 24 hrs., or the worldwide marketshare Samsung has with their newest flagship device, those numbers will never persuade your hard-earned money to leave your wallet. It's about your personal experience, and that of those whom you communicate with.
Reframe the way you communicate with people, and you can start seeing an immediate change in perception. One of the greatest ads I remember are the "Find Your Greatness" ads Nike ran during the London 2012 Olympics. It's a series of stories, and not once does it talk about their product. That's the power of story. Watch one of the ads below.
