English Says The Darndest Things

No comments:

One thing that I enjoy while reading is to discover new words. The English language is such a hodge-podge collection of various influences, conquerers and marriages (see The History of the English Language in Ten Minutes here) and constantly re-inventing itself, it's absolutely brilliant.

So I want to start a series called "Locution" to share some fun English words I stumble across now and then. Here's Entry #1:

Supercilious

[soo-per-sil-ee-uhs] adjective

Definition: haughtily disdainful or contemptuous, as a person or a facial expression.

Example sentence: It should also be pointed out that many planners have a supercilious view of intelligence and intelligence officers.

Not only is it fun to say (reminds me of Al Gore in South Park being "Super Cereal!") but a great word to throw out when someone is acting supercilious, and catch them off guard.

Enjoy!
